College Success – What Does it Take?

College success is not as difficult for most young students as learning how to take on adult responsibilities. Letting go of adolescence and becoming an adult is more challenging according to Carl Pickardt, Psychologist and adolescent specialist. If you take responsibility for showing up to class regularly, turning papers and work in on time, and sacrificing some of the time spent with friends in favor of more study time, you have won half the battle for achieving college success. Being responsible for meeting the demands of college (ability to respond and step up to the plate) is one of the keys to college achievement.

You already have been using some of the higher level thinking skills needed to succeed in college. You use these skills when you solve your life problems and overcome obstacles. Your lack of success in college will not be because you are not smart enough. There are many different types of intelligence and my experience in working with hundreds of students has shown that practically every student is smart in one way or another. For more information on different types of intelligence other than IQ, you can read the theories of Howard Gardner (Multiple Intelligences), Robert Sternberg (Successful Intelligence) and Daniel Goleman (Emotional and Social Intelligence).

In addition to self-responsibility, there are three other factors you will need to succeed in college:

1. Learning how to learn and study skills — You need to learn how to learn effectively and the ways that you learn best. Most colleges offer at least one college success course which can teach you these skills. These courses also need to be taught to high school students, but sadly few high schools provide them. A good college success course will teach you: how to study and learn, reading comprehension strategies, your best learning styles and types of intelligences, how to set and reach your goals, time management, discovery of your talents and strengths, career exploration, writing skills, note taking, problem solving, and more.

2. Work Ethic — Good study and work habits will lead you to success in college and in the work force. Good study skills will only be effective if you apply them. They will be worthless to you if you do not use them.

3. Motivation — Without motivation you will not consistently use good study skills, work habits and your intelligence and potential. There are two types of motivation, the carrot (pleasure) and the stick (pain). When you use these together you will have a powerful motivational combination. Keep your long-range goals for achieving a college education in your mind’s eye. For example, let’s say you want a degree in secondary education to become a teacher. Visualize and imagine yourself as a teacher who is making a positive difference for your students. Enjoy the positive feelings that come when you see yourself as a great teacher. This is the carrot and a reminder of one of the benefits (pleasure) you will experience by achieving your goal. Also remind yourself of the stick (pain) or the consequences if you do not achieve your goal of completing a degree in secondary education. It can deprive you of becoming a teacher. Reminding yourself of the benefits and consequences will help you to stay motivated and persistent. Also break your long-range goals into small steps. Every step accomplished provides you with positive feedback and will increase your motivation to reach your long-range goals.

You can succeed in college, in your career, and in your life. Where to begin? Start with college success by taking responsibility, learning how to learn effectively and how you learn best, using good study skills and work habits, and by fueling your motivation to succeed. Use these four keys and you will open the door to college success and the gateway to your dreams.

Writing Tips for the Aspiring Writer

When I first begin to write, I would use an egg timer to ensure I wrote the length of time I desired. I first set the timer for fifteen minutes writing time. As I began to grow, I set it for thirty minutes. Now, years later, I have no need for the timer because I am in my rhythmic writing season.

As a beginning writer it is good to set certain rituals around yourself. For example find the place to write where you feel most inspired. It may be in your home office, in a library, a coffee shop or by the lake. Every writer is different and to be honest, I have written in all the above places. The key is to find the place that works best for you. Sometimes I need to get away from home because I am distracted there. The laundry and the housework have a strange way of calling my name.

The second key ritual is to do some type of mental or physical preparation. Stretching, praying, mediating or taking several deep breaths before writing are just a few examples. The physical and mental preparation will signal your mind and your body that writing will begin soon. Also your “creative self” will appreciate the attention which you are giving to it and the response from your writing will be worth it.

During your time of writing, if you find yourself writing past thirty minutes, give your body the break it needs. Get up, walk around, get a drink of water and stretch. Your back, arms, hands and overall body will thank you. One thing I have experienced is that tense, tight feeling of muscles getting stiff from not giving my body the rest it needs from sitting in front of a computer.

Just a side tip here: watch those distractions! You can believe when you make a decision to write your book, article or blog, distractions have a way of showing up. The majority of the time our distractions will come in the form of people or pets. It can be your spouse who needs some extra attention. It can be your child who believes you are the only person who knows where their sock is hiding. It can be your pet who needs to go for a walk now or needs to play right now. Another distraction can be that person you may have in your life that loves the drama of the storm. You know the one whom you will give your time, attention and wisdom and yet they seem to love the problem more than the solution. In days of old, I would set the timer on six minutes. If we could not discuss the situation and come to some sort of resolution, I would politely announce, “I am writing and will have to call you back later.” Now, I do not answer the phone at all.”

Lastly enjoy your writing time. Treat it as a time with your creative self and have fun. Write what you a passionate about. Write what you hear. Write what you think. Be yourself and just write.

If you are reading this article, then you must be in one of two situations: either you are considering learning the violin, or you have just started learning the violin and now wonder how long it will take to master playing the violin. In either case, this article will let you know what the key factors are in determining how fast you learn the violin.

Actually, if you are just starting out in learning how to play the violin, you really should focus on picking up the correct bowing techniques and building a solid foundation instead to wondering how fast you can learn the violin. You should be aware that in rushing to do anything, especially in learning a new skill such as playing the violin, you are robbing yourself the joy of the journey in mastering the instrument.

1. Have the right attitude

In the beginning, you may find that you progress very fast when you first start to learn to play the violin. Then subsequently at the intermediate level, many people find that they are stuck and that their violin playing skill does not improve. This is when most people give up.

The first factor in determining how fast you learn the violin is your attitude towards mastering the skill. Adopt a positive outlook as that will aid you when at times, you feel that you may never be able to play the violin properly. It is common for anyone to face setback when learning the violin. The important thing is not to let it overwhelm you and keep on the determination to learn.

2. Practice constantly

As in learning any new skill, devote at least half an hour to an hour a day to perfect your bowing techniques and learn to read music notes properly. Train your ear so that you play in perfect pitch.

For many people, in the beginning they ensure that they practice every day. Then the mundane nature of the routine tires them out and they soon lost interest. You must never let that happen. Remember that only through practicing can you perfect your violin playing skills and make fast progress.

You will need to have the determination and discipline in learning the violin so you can progress quickly.

3. Start with a quality violin and violin bow

Many new beginners have the perception that because they are new in learning to play the violin, the music instrument can be one that is of a certain pricing and quality that is quite low. They may think that they save money by starting out with a cheaper instrument, however what they do not realise is that a music instrument of low or inferior quality actually arrest their growth as a musician.

The reason is that cheap violins do not produce nice tonal quality and because they are not properly set up, the sound produced by the instrument is squeaky. The strings of the violin may hurt your fingers.

As such I always advise my customers to start off with a reasonably good quality violin and violin bow. This will accelerate your learning process and you will find that learning the violin is pure pleasure.

Coaching Certification – It’s Not Important, But What Is?

In the coaching profession it is not necessary to get a coaching certification. In other words just about anyone can begin coaching without prior certification from any school or institution. Although there are some places that are making moves to regulate the profession, getting a coaching certification is not a requirement to be great at what you do.

What makes a great coach?

Having a coaching certification is not the basis for one to be considered an amazing coach. If you have prior experience in your field of expertise and you have the zeal and passion to support others then you may have what it takes to be a successful professional coach. You know the ins and outs of the business because you’ve been there done it. Anyone can start their own coaching business with virtually zero training or certifications.

However there is one “training” activity all successful coaches partake in consistently. They are always being coached themselves by a coach who is ahead of where they want to be. It makes sense right? If a coach wants to help their clients grow they must be growing themselves. This is where the true learning comes from. Being coached regularly is the best way to improve as a coach and a mentor.

But in case you’re wondering why there are people who want to get certified, they were indoctrinated by coaching organizations and schools. They believe it’s essential and that’s why these institutions exist to certify them.

Many people want to get certified because they want a validation that they are good coaches. But the truth is, it is highly possible to be certified even if you are not that good of a coach. In the same way that there are many great coaches that exist out there without coaching certification.

There is nothing wrong with getting a coaching certification, but then again there is no guarantee that a certified coach can deliver better results than an uncertified one. In fact, anyone with a printer can claim that they are certified coach-and I mean anyone who may not even have experience in business or in other fields. Who knows right?

If a coaching certification doesn’t matter then, what does?

Experience, ability, a great system-these are just few of the elements that matter when it comes to choosing a business coach. Clients want to invest in people who can help them; a person whom they believe in. And coaches must have a solid background in business or in other fields in order for them to gain the respect and trust of their clients.

Experience in their field can speak for itself. Bill Gates, for example, does not need to be certified in order for him to become a successful business coach. Ask yourself, does he need a certification?

What’s also important is whether or not the he or she was able to deliver desirable results for her or his previous clients. Was she or he able to improve a business, achieve goals or improve relationships? This is an effective way to measure whether or not a coach has a system that works for their clients.

The most important reasons why certain coaches succeed in their field is their irreversible passion for what they do. Coaches can make a great difference in people’s lives only when they have a heart for coaching. And having a coaching certification cannot replace passion, experience, real and raw skills.

They will learn much about dog psychology and how to have socialization with some other dogs especially the younger puppies. With this obedience canine training the canine owners may join in the training directly along their dogs and with their trainers. This will develop the owner and the dog’s bond much stronger.

At this training dog school the trainers do not train the dogs only but the dog owners as well. Because dogs have the tendency and natural habit to obey and follow their pack leader and this must be the owners and not the trainers. And so the dog owners need to know and learn how to train their own dogs at home too. They must be able also to know some troubleshooting that may arise and the command to use in such training. Your dog will learn much and have the dog socialization training that it really needs at the training school.

It is really important for a puppy to get some socialization training when it is growing up to become friendly and a well behaved dog. Shy and lonely dogs are often alone and neglected and do not have other dogs to play with. These things will be erased at the training school and will be taught dog socialization successfully even for just some days only. The training school is the right place to get your dog for its training and also the safest and best place for it.
